Growing Zen

A traditional, yet still exotic looking, plant for your zen patio is a gorgeous bonsai! There are many different varieties to choose from, and you can keep them on the patio during the summer months, then bring them indoors when it grows cooler. A single bonsai plant makes a harmonious centrepiece, with a simple elegance that doesn't need embellishments. Natural stones or wood can be used as a top-dressing on your planter for a finishing touch. Choose a colour that matches your patio decor and make sure to keep it out of heavy drafts or wind. You can use a simple pot, or dress it up with something fancy!

If you're not sure how to care for an orchid, don't worry, we have our orchid-pampering guide right here for you to look at. For an Asian inspired look that will last longer than the summer months, plant a Japanese Maple in a pot or directly into your garden.

This slow-growing, beautifully coloured perennial will produce amazing foliage every year, putting on a new display for each season. We love the Coral Bark Maple, because even in the winter months, the bright red bark adds a spot of colour to your garden. Not sure what Japanese Maples are right for a West Coast garden? Another favourite sound is running water, which you can easily produce with a small fountain. For an added touch of Asian inspiration, choose a fountain that gives a nod to Japanese or Far East heritage. Natural fountains, such as bamboo or stone arrangements, are a great choice too.  Creating a zen patio for the summer - West Coast Gardens in Surrey BC

DIY Zen Garden for Small Spaces

For those of you with a small patio, who might want a 'condensed' zen garden, try this planter design! We use beautiful foliage, natural stone elements, and a statue accent to capture a calm and harmonious feeling in a container garden that can sit on a table indoors or out.

This summer look for ways to promote zen, peace and tranquillity in the garden and patio. Life may not be very calm right now, but we can create our own space to relax in and escape the craziness of everyday stresses. Have a wonderful staycation - you deserve it!
